The history of the Hakone Miyanoshita Onsen

In the Muromachi period (1336-1573), a hot spring source was discovered in Hakone Miyanoshita Onsen, which gushed out from under the Kumano Shrine, and it flourished as a therapeutic hot spring during the Edo period (1603-1868). Then, after the opening of the port of Yokohama in the 19th century (late Edo - Meiji periods), it flourished as a resort for foreigners and was visited by celebrities from all over the world.

The greatest feature of Miyanoshita Onsen is the old townscape that remains today, centered around the Fujiya Hotel, which was established in 1878. Many guests say that they forget the passage of time when they look into each buildings that are still in business as they were in the past. Although there are few accommodations, the entire local community works together with the Miyanoshita shopping association to maintain the promenade and decorate the monuments, conveying the hospitality of the guests. We hope you will enjoy a relaxing trip to Hakone by soaking in the hot spring water which is gentle on the skin and enjoying the onsen spirit as you stroll along the hot spring streets.
